West Lakeside
Master Plan

Laguna, California

The campus master plan for this new K-8 school was based on the Fibonacci spiral design created by mathematician Leonardo da Vinci. This layout provided a variable orientation of the buildings so indirect daylight was allowed into the buildings while keeping direct daylight out. This layout also provided a teaching aid to students of implementation of the mathematical concept. Challenges for this plan included getting a public street connection to the existing arterial streets due to the land-locked site as well as environmental concerns related to wetlands and a river running just outside the property line. We also incorporated green features such as solar panels and provided a connection between the indoors and outdoors with outdoor learning spaces and hubs.
